Dear Parents/Carers
I hope this letter finds you and your families well. As we approach the Easter break, I want to take a moment to reflect on a busy and successful week at school.
It was fantastic to see so many Year 8 families at the Progress Evening on Thursday. I hope you found the meetings with subject teachers informative and that students now have a clear understanding of their next steps to continue making progress. Thank you for your engagement and support.
Yesterday, thirty Year 9 students had the exciting opportunity to attend a Classics Department trip to see Elektra at the Duke of York’s Theatre in Leicester Square. The play, originally written by the ancient Greek tragedian Sophocles, explores timeless themes of revenge, justice, and family loyalty, following Elektra’s quest to avenge her father’s murder. Travelling into London's vibrant Leicester Square added to the excitement and anticipation. The highlight for many was seeing Brie Larson, best known as Captain Marvel, take on the role of Elektra, delivering a performance that exceeded expectations. A rotating stage and an enchanting chorus brought a raw and powerful interpretation of the tragedy to life. Experiencing Greek drama live sparked plenty of discussion afterward, making it a truly memorable and enriching experience beyond the classroom.
A reminder that Kooth continues to provide free, confidential mental health support for young people. This online platform offers a safe space where students can access professional counselling, peer support, and helpful resources at any time. Encouraging open conversations about mental well-being is vital, and Kooth is an excellent resource to support this.
Families may be interested in the Waltham Forest Easter Holiday Activity and food Programme, which offers a variety of activities for young people over the break. There are sports, creative workshops, and other engaging sessions available.
I had the pleasure of watching our Year 9 football team in action on Wednesday. Despite a 3-0 loss, the score line does not reflect the effort and determination shown by the team. It was a highly competitive match against Willowfield, and our players worked exceptionally hard throughout.
The Year 7 netball team played their final league match against Walthamstow School for Girls, showcasing excellent teamwork, sportsmanship and growth throughout. With a fantastic 9-1 victory, they secured second place in the league and now advance to the semi-finals. Their dedication to training, not just in netball but across multiple sports, has been truly commendable. Well done to the entire team and to all our athletes that have had a fantastic season/term.
Great progress has been made on the AstroTurf this week, and we are pleased to say it is nearly finished. After the Easter holidays, our students will be able to enjoy using it in PE lessons and during breaks and lunchtimes. This is an exciting development for our school, and we can’t wait to see it in full use.
Yesterday, Ms Riaz, Head of Year 11, sent a message to Year 11 families emphasizing the importance of revision over the Easter break, as GCSE exams approach. I fully echo this sentiment—consistent preparation now will make a significant difference. That said, it is also important for students to balance their studies with some relaxation and downtime.
From the 1st April many of us saw rises in our household bills. It is always worth signposting where information and advice can be sought. I have included here an extract from Cllr Grace Williams, Leader of Waltham Forest Council, bulletin to Waltham Forest residents that contains some useful information. The full bulletin can be viewed here.
‘We want to make sure all residents are aware of the support they might be entitled to. If you are struggling to pay your Council Tax bill, or you are in arrears, you can get in touch with us to find out what support is available.
Water supplier Thames Water is also offering some support for people going through financial hardship. You can check to see if you are eligible for help with your water bill by filling in the online assessment form on the Thames Water website.
You can get all the information you need about how to save money on energy bills, reduce food costs, and access free debt and financial advice on the cost-of-living information pages on our website.
If you are in receipt of Universal Credit, Income Support or any number of other employment or tax-related benefits, your child may be eligible for free school meals. Our website features more information about how to apply for free school meals in Waltham Forest.’
