Headteacher's Weekly Update 16 - Friday 10th January 2025

Dear Parents/Carers

I hope this letter finds you and your families well.  I hope too that you had a restful and enjoyable Christmas break and that the new year finds you feeling recharged and ready for the term ahead.  One of the great things about a school year is the opportunity for fresh starts, and the new calendar year offers just that.  I wish you all a happy and successful 2025 as part of the Kelmscott community.

We have exciting news as Phase 3 of our expansion capital works begin this term, with completion anticipated by the summer.  These works will provide us with state-of-the-art 4G Astroturf, new PE changing rooms, a new science lab, improved music facilities, and enhanced accommodation for our SEND department, among other upgrades.  These are exciting developments for our school and will further enhance the opportunities available to our students.

For our Year 9 students, exams will begin on Monday, 13th January.  These will include a combination of in-class assessments and standardised GL assessments in English and Maths.  Information on how to revise and the topics being assessed can be found on our school website.  The results will play an important role in guiding the options process later this term and more details about this process will follow in due course.

For those interested in exploring careers in business and accounting, I would like to highlight three events all are free to attend virtually:

And an opportunity for those with an interest in technology and how it shapes the banking world, Lloyds Banking Group, the UK’s largest digital bank, will be hosting a virtual event designed to introduce participants to the world of FinTech.  Tuesday 14th January, 5pm - 6pm.  For more details and to apply please see here

We are pleased to share that we have now begun the transition to our new parent communication app, EduLink. Thank you to those families who have already downloaded the app and started using it. For those who have not yet received a login link email, it’s often due to us not having an up-to-date email address on file. Please ensure your contact details are correct so we can send you the necessary links. Please be aware that messaging via EduLink is currently disabled until we have fully transitioned to the new app.  Parents/carers should continue to use MyEd for all school communications until the live launch of EduLink; we will notify you in advance of when this will happen.

This Thursday and Friday, as part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental awareness, Year 8 have been participating in the Young Green Briton Challenge. As part of the challenge, students are creating innovative projects and campaigns that respond to climate and environmental challenges around Kelmscott and Walthamstow. More details to follow in my update to families next week.

There's plenty to look forward to in the coming months for all our athletes.  Next week ‘kicks’ off with matches for our basketball and football teams and we see our Chess team heading to Norlington School and Sixth Form to compete in the annual Borough Championship.  You may remember we are the defending champions in the lower school competition.  The very best of luck to all our teams and participants.

An exciting opportunity I would like to highlight for young cricket enthusiasts.  The borough’s Under-13s Girls, Under-13s Boys and Under-15s Girls teams are currently recruiting for the chance to represent Waltham Forest at the London Youth Games Cricket qualifiers and competition in March.  To sign up for trials, please complete the London Youth Games cricket trials pre-registration form to secure a place.  Trials will take place on the 10th, 16th, and 17th of January.   Participants must either live or attend school in the borough to be eligible.  This is a fantastic opportunity for our cricketers to showcase their skills and passion for the sport.   To find out more information, email Feel.Good@walthamforest.gov.uk.

Finally, I’d like to celebrate some student achievements.  Well done to the students named below who topped the reward point charts in the last week of term.  A particular well done to Ebru Yesildas 10S, who achieved an impressive 59 points, topping the charts for the entire school, an excellent accomplishment.

  • Year 7, Musa Nasir in 7E with 52 points

  • Year 8, Asliddin Omarov in 8T with 43 points

  • Year 9, Yana Dutchak in 9T with 46 points
